Submachine gun from Finland that changed history

A submachine gun is an automatic weapon capable of continuous firing and equipped with pistol cartridges. This type of weapon was spread not so long ago. Back in the middle of the last century, most of the rank and file of the army of any country was armed with rifles and carbines, and the appearance of such a powerful, easy and convenient means of defense and attack on the horizon radically changed the rules of combat.

The first submachine gun in the world is the product of General Thompson, who, in fact, invented the term submachine gun itself. But even on the continent, the arms race was in full swing — the Germans succeeded most in creating similar weapons. The second place went, oddly enough, to the rather peace-loving Finns: forced to constantly take into account the growing aggression of the Soviet Union, they, at some point, threw all their strength to the creation of adequate and modern weapons that meet the urgent needs.

Such a miracle weapon was the famous Suomi M / 31, developed and commissioned by Finnish gunsmith Aimo Lahti. This submachine gun, in the near future, was to become the progenitor of the famous PCA and, in general, to initiate the equipping of all the armies of the world with weapons of this type. We decided to dwell a little bit more on this beautiful specimen of weapon thought.

Aimo Johannes Lahti was one of the best gunsmiths of his time. A self-educated person who escaped from a boring school to the factory, he bought a “jerk” for the very first salary, and then decided to devote his life to the deadly beauty of small arms. Like all goal-oriented people, he achieved his goal with interest: the position of the chief gunsmith of the Finnish army gave Lahti a blank check for the development of any weapon. Among others, he invented a very successful model of the Suomi submachine gun, which was destined to become the prototype of our PCA.

Where did that come from

In fact, Suomi itself is not an original copy. Like all other submachine guns, he draws his lineage from the famous German MP-18: the design of the bolt and some external details repeat it exactly. However, it was Suomi’s developers who did not hesitate to make several very significant changes to the design, which turned this software into a very, very effective weapon of war.

What was it for?

The Finns did not consider the new submachine gun as the main weapon of a regular army soldier. But the troops simply didn’t have enough light machine guns, so Suomi quickly gained popularity: there were three or four BCPs per branch.

Special features

One of the main features of the new Suomi was a removable barrel, previously used only in the manufacture of machine guns. The product Lahti was considered one of the most technologically advanced submachine guns of its time. Many parts were made on machine tools, and the receiver was solid. For high-quality build Finnish soldiers had to pay overweight: in the curb condition, "Suomi" weighed as much as seven kilograms.

Efficiency

Suomi, despite some complaints, became, nevertheless, a very effective and reliable weapon - almost the best in its class. It was perfectly suitable for use at extremely low temperatures, which was very important for Finland, especially in winter. Actually, it was precisely the high efficiency of the weapons, so impressed by the Red Army soldiers during the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939, that influenced the expansion of production and the desire for mass armament of the entire Red Army soldiers.

disadvantages

But there were miracle weapons and their flaws. Moreover, they did not allow the submachine gun, in general, beautiful, time-appropriate weapon, to become massive. First of all, Suomi was very expensive to manufacture. Secondly, the weight of seven kilograms was not suitable for exhausting force marches and tired soldiers. Thirdly, the automatic machine demanded a very careful attitude towards itself: the vacuum retardant shutter stuck at the slightest hint of contamination and even misting of weapons. In addition, the relatively low damaging ability of the submachine gun did not allow it to be used as the main weapon of a soldier.
