Stunning photos of whales and killer whales off the coast of Norway

Eight years ago, the famous photographer Espen Bergersen made a whole series of wonderful photos of whales and killer whales frolicking near the Norwegian island of Andyja. And since then, he has photographed these magnificent creatures at every opportunity. Hundreds of whales swim to northern Norway during the winter months (October-January) for feeding. In his pictures animals communicate, play, eat and swim together.

The humpback whale opens its mouth wide to scoop up more fresh herring. Bergersen says that whales can open their mouths so widely that a car would pass through it.

The photographer caught the moment of the killer whale chase the prey of fat herring. By the way, scientists have found that killer whales often use their tail to spank and stun fish before hunting it.

Three humpback whales (left) surround a herring flock that looks like an ink stain in the water from above. Two killer whales (in the lower right corner) also take part in the general fun, as can be seen in this magnificent picture, taken with the help of a drone.

Four killer whales staged an exciting show, which, according to Bergersen, was similar to what can be seen in Sea World, but for free.

By the tail of a whale, each individual can be identified. Bergerson said that the same whale in this photo was photographed five nautical miles north-west of Reykjavik 22 years, 4 months and 13 days before.

And this is a company of frolicking orcas. The average life expectancy of a female in the wild is 50 years, and the male is 29 years.

Bergersen said that he just clicked the camera when this humpback whale suddenly jumped out of the water. The passengers of the boat (in the background) also witnessed a fascinating spectacle.

Each of the halves of the whale's tail can reach four meters in length, and the pectoral fins can reach five meters, about a third of the total body length.

Killer whales have noticeable dorsal fins, by which they can always be distinguished. In males, these fins can reach up to one and a half meters, while in females and young males, they seem not to be vertical, but curved.

Although killer whales tend to inhabit cold waters, they can be found in all the world's oceans from the Antarctic to the tropics. Like their relatives dolphins, orcas have a conical head with a small beak.

Since his first whale watching eight years ago, Bergersen has sold his photos to a variety of magazines, newspapers and publications, and has won a lot of awards in photo contests.

This amazing photo was taken with the help of a drone. The whales are the second largest mammals on the planet, and their numbers suffer greatly from commercial whaling.

Orca emerges from the water, and seagulls are circling above it. Looks like there are a lot of fish here, and everyone is hunting it.

Bergersen says that killer whales and humpback whales swimming together is an unusual sight, but there is one thing that unites these two species: food.

When whales slap tails, the noise spreads for many kilometers. Tail strikes are believed to be used as a linking method or to stun prey.

Finals (whales) have a distinctly projecting ridge along the back behind the dorsal fin, due to which they received the nickname razorback (sharp ridge). This species is endangered, with a population of 50 to 90 thousand individuals.

Bergersen says that sunset is the ideal time for photographing whales, because in the golden light you can see the fountains of the smallest water spray, and their outlines can be quite amazing.
