Very often, when it comes to pediculosis, many parents believe that this topic does not concern them, because they are well caring for their baby, so he is not threatened with lice. But it is important to understand that lice can appear in every child, regardless of the conditions of his life. Pediculosis is a very common disease among children, about one in five children had lice at least once in their life.

To protect your baby from lice, parents need to know how to prevent head lice, how to cure it quickly, if it appeared, how to determine if the child has lice.

Where do head lice come from

Many parents believe that lice infest only in children from disadvantaged families.This is not true! The main cause of pediculosis in children is close household contact with each other. Kids often change combs, rubber bands, hairpins, hats, love to play at a hairdresser, put their belongings next to the things of other children.

At risk are girls with long hair. And also those children who rest in camps, sanatoriums, lie in children's hospitals, because there children's beds are close to each other, lice can easily crawl from one pillow to another.

When lice fall on the head, they lay eggs (nits), sticking them to the hair shaft with a special adhesive substance. After 8-10 days from these eggs, the larvae appear, which after 10 days turn into an adult louse capable of laying eggs. One louse lives about 40 days, during this period it lays about 350-400 eggs.

How to determine that a child has pediculosis

Usually lice are very difficult to detect in a child's hair, because they are perfectly masked. The main symptom of pediculosis isitchy scalp. But it so happens that itching occurs only a few months after the appearance of lice.

WITHAmong the other signs of lice can be noted:

  • the presence of nits in the hair (they are small, white and gray), most often they are behind the ears and near the neck;
  • adult lice on the hair;
  • a rash on the neck that can be caused by the products of lice.

If you find lice in a child, consult a pediatrician, you can get advice by phone or call a doctor at home, it is better not to go to the clinic, so as not to infect other children.

By the way, as soon as you have started active treatment of pediculosis, your baby can safely attend kindergarten, school and other places where children gather. After treatment with a special shampoo, the lice die, only nits remain, and they cannot crawl onto another child, which means your baby is not contagious.

What to do if a child has lice

Often, lice are found during routine inspections in a school or kindergarten. What is the sequence of actions in this case.

  1. If a child has found lice, it is necessary to check whether those who are in close contact with him have: relatives, classmates, children from circles and sections. All family members who have found lice should be treated at the same time so that they do not infect each other again.A child with pediculosis should not attend children's groups until it is cured.

But in such severe disinfection measures there is no special need, since the lice and their eggs die after being heat treated for 5 minutes at temperatures above 53.5 ° C.

  3. Clean the sofa and other soft surfaces, wipe the furniture, vacuum and wash to remove hair that could fall on it.

  4. Combs, hairpins, hair ties should be thrown away. And replace with new ones.

  5. Treat the head with special pediculocyte shampoos, comb lice and their eggs out of the hair with the help of a thick comb.

  6. After the child has been treated for lice, give him clean clothes, make clean bed sheets.
