Nhlanhla Nene has officially resigned as a Member of Parliament

- Not long after stepping down as Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene also resigned as MP

- Nene left his post as Finance Minister after he admitted that he previously lied about his relations with the Gupta family

- Nene thanked the ANC for the chance he had to serve the country

Former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene has resigned as a Member of Parliament.

Shortly after stepping down as Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene decided to resign as Member of Parliament as well.

Nene stepped down as minister only 2 weeks after he testified at the State Capture Inquiry. He admitted in front of Judge Raymond Zondo's commission that he had been dishonest about his dealings with the Gupta family.

Nene thanked the ANC for the opportunity he had to serve South Africa, according to a report by EWN.

I take this opportunity to thank you for the working relationship we have had during my tenure as a Member of Parliament. I am also indebted to the ANC and the people of South Africa for having given me the opportunity to serve our country in my capacity as an elected representative.

Nene was applauded by Jackson Mthembu, ANC chief whip, for owning up to his mistakes.
