I will always remember your heartbeat

9 days after you told me it was all over, I had to pick up my belongings from our apartment once. 9 days after you shredded my heart, I had to meet you again - knowing that this will be the last time I see you.
I knew that this was the worst thing I could do for myself.I knew that it would be another blow to the heart with a knife. I knew that the last hope to bring you back existed only in my desperate mind.

I could already feel the infinite amount of pain I was going to inflict on myself, but I continued to walk, pulling the keys to your apartment with shaking hands. I was trembling, not controlling myself, complete chaos, I could not breathe, overflowed with despair.

I knocked on the door. I usually opened it without warning. You silently opened. We hugged. Everything was strange, but strangely familiar. I was cold and hungry. You gave me your favorite sweater, a cup of coffee and some food.

You were caring as always, but you didn't care about me anymore.

You told me how your heart broke when you collected all my things. You were lying on the floor, crying over one of my unwashed T-shirts. You cried in the pillow because it still smelled of me. You asked to leave my toothbrush, otherwise yours will be lonely in a glass. You left the ginger tea, knowing that this is the last thing you bought me.

You literally bought me my favorite tea and in a few hours ruined my whole world.

We both knew that you would feel happier and freer without me, but at that moment we suffered together. We sat on the bed. A bed that was the abode of our love, our nightly conversations, our laughter, our jokes, hugs, lazy weekends and silly dreams.

We looked each other in the eye for ages. My eyes shone brighter than the moon, but the stars in your eyes were dead. The stars that used to tell me that you love me just by looking at me. The stars that surrounded what used to be your world - me.

You tried to wipe my tears and did not hold back yours. The way you cried that night broke my heart again. More because I didn’t understand what caused them - your sadness or guilt.

I put my head on your chest. I could hear your heart beating. Your hands stroked my hair.Your sweater was so soft under my cheeks. I closed my eyes. Your smell was the most soothing in the world. You were my home. I will remember that moment until the end of my life.

I knew that no words or kisses would make you mine again. And then I left because you left me.
