Empathy or how to raise a good child

Empathy or how to raise a good child

You should not expect that the ability to sympathy is passed on to the child by inheritance. If you want your child to grow up kind and to empathize, the feeling of compassion must be raised from the very birth of the baby. And the main condition for this is your personal example.

4 STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT EMPATHIA

The ability to share the emotional state of another person in psychology is called empathy. Empathy develops as the child matures. Psychologist Martin Hoffman identified 4 stages of development of empathy in children.

Stage 1 (0 - 1 year) Global empathy. The infant shares the reactions of others unknowingly. Surely you noticed how one child, hearing the cry of another, began to scream himself.

Stage 2 (1-2 years) Egocentric empathy. The kid already understands the emotions of others, but is looking for a way that is familiar to him in such a situation. For example, if he sees how another child will strike and cry nearby, the baby will start calling his mother, because his mother always helps him.

Stage 3 (2-3 years) Empathy for the experiences of others. The child has matured and is able to understand the emotions of others and share them. Now he perceives feelings more subtly, and his vocabulary has also expanded, which makes it possible to express empathy verbally. If mother hurt herself, he can pity her, comfort her with a kind word, stroke the injury site, that is, he is already able to sympathize and try to help.

Stage 4 (after 3 years) Sympathy for the general condition of another person. This stage begins when the child already feels like an independent person, separate from the outside world. He perceives the sorrow of others not just as a momentary problem, but thinks about the reasons for its occurrence. The child is able to empathize and look for ways to help.

8 RULES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMPATHIA

1.Show your child what compassion is in his example. Is the child hurt and crying in pain? Hug and caress him. Do not ignore the child’s misfortunes, even if they seem insignificant to you. Otherwise, where does the child get the empathy of someone else's pain, if his pain has been ignored since childhood?

2.With a small child, train basic social skills by playing role-playing games: take pity on a fallen rabbit, treat a sick teddy bear.

3.Do not be afraid to periodically read to your child "pitiful" fairy tales. After reading together, disassemble them: what did the ugly duckling experience when other birds did not accept it? Which fairy tale do you feel sorry for?

4.An older child who already goes to kindergarten can cite as an example merciful people. In an accessible form, tell the child about Mother Teresa, Janusz Korczak and other famous altruists. You can also share family stories about the good deeds of someone from relatives and stories from your life. Remember who you helped, and who helped you, or maybe you witnessed someone's mercy. Discuss how each character felt.

5.If possible, get a pet. It doesn't matter if it is a cat, a dog, or some small animal like a guinea pig or a parrot. It is important that the child has someone to take care of. Communication with animals contributes to the development of good nature in children.

6.Teach your child to share.Give your child to the garden or for a walk in the courtyard treats that he can share with his friends. Together choose gifts for your and his friends, prepare surprises for dad, grandmother, grandfather and other relatives. You can first help the child to present at the same time how they will be happy when they receive a gift.

7.Offer the children with whom your child plays the idea of not a competitive, but a team game. For example, to build a house together or “open” your store. The main thing is that the children act together, consult with each other, offer their ideas.

8.Try to protect the child from scenes of violence. And it's not just about adult films and news on TV, but also about neighborly quarrels, your quarrels in the presence of a child.

But the most important thing you need to remember is that empathy develops in children whose parents themselves have a highly developed sense of compassion and empathy. And if a child is surrounded by love, warmth and trust, he will necessarily form a feeling of empathy.
